Director: Stephen Edwards
Peter Shaffer’s masterpiece created an unforgettable portrait of the terminally mediocre composer Salieri tormented by the precociously brilliant yet infantile Mozart. Jon’s music and sound design wove together the source music with abstract electronic soundscapes created from digitally manipulated samples from Mozart and Salieri. He also created a tormented soundworld for Salieri, ‘recomposing’ and extending fragments of source music into twisted harmonic nightmares and ambient electronic textures. The two Venticelli were given a glittering pitiless soundworld; usually played as jovial servants of Salieri, they appeared in this production as implacable avenging or protecting angels.
★★★★★ (Guardian) ‘…this production would disgrace neither the National nor the RSC – …quality is the word for this stunning production…the folding in of the music is as superb as the evocative lighting…and Jon Nicholls’ finely understated score…’
